Choose a South Island road trip around your days, overnight bases and travel style. Compare alpine-lake and West Coast routes without rushing every destination.
Choose one route shape first
A Christchurch–Tekapo–Aoraki / Mount Cook–Queenstown journey focuses on alpine lakes and the Southern Lakes. A West Coast route introduces rainforest, glacier-country and different road stages. Tourism New Zealand publishes several itinerary shapes; there is no single route that is best for everyone.
Write down your arrival airport, final departure point and number of nights. Then choose the places where you want enough time to stop, rather than building a route from every appealing destination name.
Overnight bases are more useful than a kilometre total
A route can look short on a map yet require time for winding roads, breaks, conditions and sightseeing. Keep a distinction between a transfer day and a day spent exploring. If Milford Sound is a priority, allow a separate Fiordland day rather than treating it as a quick stop between regions.
Ask about practical one-way transport if your trip starts in Christchurch and ends in Queenstown. Return day tours are different products and should not be assumed to include an onward drop-off.
Keep optional experiences optional
Reserve independent activities around your chosen overnight bases. Admission, cruises, flights and accommodation are separate arrangements unless your quote says otherwise. Add weather alternatives and avoid a fixed flight immediately after a long alpine-road day.
Check NZTA before each major road stage, and use DOC for current walking access. Private transport removes your driving task, but it does not remove weather, road closures or the need for a practical timetable.
