7-Day South Island Itinerary: An Alpine Lakes Planning Route
Plan seven days around Christchurch, Tekapo, Mount Cook and Queenstown. Keep driving stages realistic, leave weather flexibility and book activities separately.
Days 1–2: Christchurch and Lake Tekapo
This suggested route follows the alpine-lakes shape published by Tourism New Zealand, not a fixed Go Kiwi Tours departure. Use the first day for arrival and Christchurch time, then travel towards the Mackenzie Basin. A late inbound flight may require an extra Christchurch night rather than an immediate long road stage.
Spend time in Tekapo around the lake and Church of the Good Shepherd. Stargazing and other paid experiences require their own arrangements and suitable conditions. Accommodation is a separate booking.
Days 3–4: Aoraki / Mount Cook and on towards Queenstown
Allow a mountain-area day with walking options based on current DOC access, weather and your group’s ability. Do not make one named track essential without checking its current status. Then plan an onward road stage to Queenstown with breaks and selected stops.
Share your overnight locations and any fixed activity bookings when requesting private transport. A scenic road journey and a dedicated walking day need different timing.
Days 5–7: Southern Lakes, Fiordland or a slower finish
Choose a Queenstown-area day such as Glenorchy, Arrowtown or Wānaka. If Milford Sound is a priority, reserve a separate substantial travel day and follow DOC road advice; alternatively, keep the extra day for local sightseeing and weather flexibility.
Keep the final flight day conservative. This plan is not an all-inclusive package: transport is quoted, while hotels, meals, admission and cruises are separate unless explicitly included. Extend the holiday if you want West Coast glacier-country rather than rushing it into the same week.
